Promoting British Values at Stonehill School

All schools are expected to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

At Stonehill School we promote these values in the following ways:

    Democracy

We ensure that pupils have a voice in the school. Pupil voice activities are carried out regularly and pupils also complete questionnaires in school. We have a school council and an Eco-council, with representatives elected from each class. We also have Travel Ambassadors who support initiatives to promote eco-friendly travel to school and around the local area.

Pupils are consulted with regard to the behaviour and reward systems at the school. All classes have a “Voice Box” where they can post ideas or concerns they may have and these are monitored regularly by the class teachers. Children are also encouraged to share their ideas for school improvement with the Headteacher and deputy Headteacher.

    The Rule of Law

At Stonehill, pupils are taught the value of and reasons behind laws which govern us in class, at school and across the country. This is done as part of our curriculum work, PSHE lessons, class and whole school assemblies and through visitors to the school. Each class contributes to a set of class rules and a Code of Conduct which they all agree to. All pupils are aware of the positive behaviour systems in school and know that they have a responsibility to follow the school rules and behave in a positive way. They are aware that there are consequences when rules and laws are broken.

    Individual Liberty

At school, pupils are actively encouraged to make decisions and choices within a safe and supportive environment. We value children’s rights as individuals and we encourage children to develop as independent learners. Pupils are encouraged to exercise their rights and personal freedoms and we teach them how to do this responsibly and safely through our vision statement, class discussions, assemblies and our PSHE curriculum.

    Mutual Respect

Our school ethos, class rules and behaviour systems reflect our commitment to establishing mutual respect for all members of the school community. Pupils are expected to behave in a kind and considerate manner towards others at all times and this is promoted on a daily basis in the classroom and throughout the school.

Tolerance of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Pupils are taught about their place in a culturally diverse society. Pupils are taught to respect each other’s’ views, faiths and beliefs through assemblies and in RE and PSHE. Assemblies and discussions challenge prejudice and positively promote tolerance of others. We visit places of worship and invite members of different faiths into school to share their knowledge to enhance learning in the classroom.
